What’s Wrong With Technology Magazines
January 22nd, 2007 by pale_whites
Most, if not all, technology and gadget magazines are little more than eye candy shopping list material.
Over time the pictures and meagre text is presented over and over again. No details are provided as to how any ratings were determined and the emphasis is on the photography.
The main problem with these magazines is that no analysis or critique is carried out on the products’ design. Either in terms of form or function. There might be a statement along the lines of ‘The user interface is dire …’ or ‘The scroll wheel is better than …’ but nothing more substantial.
This blog is about Elegant Technology , understated design, and good form. I think that magazines on the subject should focus some attention on a more detailed explanation of the design and functionality elements of a product.
Even side-by-side comparisons could be made showing, say, two mobile phones and how a user makes a call or sends a text.
Ultimately I like the language of design and want to see more of it when I read a product review.
